Chandrakant Mandare (1913 - 2001)

Old Masters

Artist Chandrakant Mandare Chandrakant Mandare started his career as an actor in Marathi films from 1935. He was painting as a hobby since 1931. He was interested in painting Landscapes, Naturescapes and portraits. Whenever there was no film shooting he used to go to many places and do an on the spot watercolour painting. He has done landscapes on the places in India (From Kashmir to Kanyakumari), France, Nepal and America. He has done around 350-400 paintings. He has donated all his paintings and his bunglow to Government where we can see a museum of his paintings in Kolhapur. In this museum we can see his paintings in Watercolour, Oil, Acrylic and Powershading. From 1997 the award is declared to the best art and artist in the name of Chandrakant Mandare.

He become the Deputy Director of the Sir J. J. School of Art and was also an award winning Art Director in Raj Kapoor's RK Film Studio, who published books illustrating his travels and despite his taxing schedules remained the true educationist. Wherever he went Acharekar carried his sketchbooks, making notations of his experiences. In his notions of art practice mastery of line and drawing was the most vital tool in creating great works of art. As sadhana is to music so sketching is to the artist, seems to be the ground rule that Acharekar followed.
