Information KALI - Divine Mother, Mother of the Universe, Adi Shakti... Kali reminds one of the Tagore's verses "Let me carry death in life that I may know life in death". Kali, also known as Kalika or Shyama, is a Hindu goddess. Kali is the chief of the Mahavidyas, a group of ten Tantric goddesses who each form a different aspect of the mother goddess Parvati. Ma Kali is kala-shakti or the power of time. Kali is the most powerful form of Shakti, she destroys the evil in order to protect the innocent. She is also seen as the divine protector and the one who bestows moksha, or liberation. Kali is often portrayed standing or dancing on her consort, the Hindu god Shiva, who lies calm and prostrate beneath her. There are several interpretations of the symbolism behind the commonly represented image of Kali standing on Shiva's supine form. A common interpretation is that Shiva symbolizes purusha, the universal unchanging aspect of reality, or pure consciousness. Kali represents Prakriti, nature or matter, sometimes seen as having a feminine quality. The merging of these two qualities represent ultimate reality. Ma Kali as the Supreme form of the Universal mother absorbs her children back into her blissful embrace. She takes us across the deepest darkness to reach the highest light.
