Master painters or Old Masters have made significant contribution to the world of Indian art. They have helped in popularising art. It is due to their contribution that various schools of art have been established across India. Many of them have been outstanding art teachers and have taught several generations of artists. History of evolution of modern art in India

The art practice as we know it today can be traced to the art schools, which were established during the British Raj. The art practice and style of work in different regions of India can be identified as distinct schools or styles of art.
