Akbar Padamsee

Old Masters

Akbar Padamsee (born 1928, in Mumbai, India) is a contemporary Indian artist, and one of the generation of established artists who started painting before Indian Independence. He was educated at the venerable Sir J. J. School of Art. He exhibited with the Progressive Artists' Group, a group that reacted against both Western classicism and folk-art revival to establish modern and personal styles. Like some others of his contemporaries, he went to Paris in the early 1950s. He later spent some time in New York. He was awarded the Fellowship of the Lalit Kala Akademi in 1962 [1]. He returned to India in 1967. He is a cousin of Alyque Padamsee, advertising maven and theatre personality.
