Information St. Mary's church at Kotgarh was built in 1872 A.D. Kotgarh which is near Thanedar in Himachal Pradesh, has lots of history associated with it. The British maintained a military post here. This was the place where Samuel Stokes, who came in as a missionary from United States of America, married a local girl Agnes Benjamin. That was in 1912. Samuel Stokes is credited with the introduction of apple plantations in Himachal, as he distributed these saplings to the poor farmers in this region in the early part of 20th century. Samuel Stokes subsequently became a Hindu and participated in the freedom struggle of India. The Stokes family is well known in the region.
