Visit
the CIMA Gallery in Kolkata during February and it will be Paresh
Maity all the way. Maity is putting together an exhibition of
watercolours his biggest exhibition so far. On show would
be 50 of his watercolours summing up 18 years of his love affair
with this medium.
An
artist who has achieved eminence in India and abroad, Paresh Maity
is straight out of the books. He is perhaps, what all-emerging
artists dream of becoming. Travelling all over the country and
the world and painting what he saw. A rags to riches story as
he himself says. Over the last two decades, Maity travelled everywhere
possible - from Rajasthan to Kerala, from Banaras to Goa and from
Asia to Europe, and wherever he went he captured every essence
and nuance on paper and canvas.
The
paintings tell the story of his evolution as an artist and his
gradual shift from minimalism to detail. They also tell the story
of long arduous hours spent painting on the spot and an intense
love for the world around us. A story of great passion which is
reflected in the vibrant colours of his paintings whether
watercolours, oils or any other media.
As
the artist says all these paintings are of the moment no
rework, no re-creation as watercolours do not give that
luxury.
The
watercolours on show, which are some of his favourites, include
work on Venice and Lake Geneva as well as a lot of his work on
Rajasthan, Varanasi, Goa and Kerala.
These
paintings mirror some of the best moments of his life. As Paresh
Maity himself says over the last 18 years of painting he
has been like a yogi in meditation. The
artist dedicates his exhibition to the tradition of watercolours
in his words a dying form of painting in this fast
paced world.
The
exhibition is on at CIMA, Kolkata from February 11 to March 13,
2004 and will be an absolute treat for art lovers especially lovers
of watercolour.
