IS IT ART OR IS IT FMCG?

Bangalore, May 2004 Buy one get one free! First it was shampoos and household cleaners, then soaps and powders…. and now Art? Unbelievable but true – the standard FMCG slogan of Buy one get one free now applies even to art.

This is the situation at a current exhibition on in Bangalore. The Time & Space Art Gallery is holding a mega sale where they are offering one for one. For example – Buy an Aparna Kaur and get an Akbar Padamsee free. The range of paintings on sale - 77 artists including Tagores, Husains, Jogen Chowdhurys and Vivan Sundaram. The sale is on till May 24.

Commercially this may have worked but we leave you to decide – is it Art? And by the way, next time you go to your friendly neighbourhood supermarket, check out the bargain shelves – you might just find a Souza or a Swaminathan!
