A NEW WORLD RECORD FOR GANDHARAN ART

New York , April 2004 – Last month’s Indian Art auction by Sotheby’s was an absolute high for contemporary Indian art. But this auction also saw another high.

The antiquities section saw a Gandharan Buddha statue of 2nd or 3rd Century go under the hammer for a price of $732,000 (more than Rs. 3.4 Crores) to a private European collector. This was the highest price ever for Gandharan art and set a world record.

We give here a picture of this absolutely exquisite and sublime piece of art.
