IT’S INDIA SHINING AT SOTHEBY’S AND CHRISTIE’S IN NEW YORK!!

New York, April 2004 – Last month we wrote about the upcoming summer auctions in New York as the two art auction giants and arch rivals Sotheby’s & Christie’s took off with Indian Art. Sotheby’s held their Indian Art auction on March 24th while Christie’s a day after.

The very fact that the Art giants were pitching for Indian Art augured well for India’s art future. But, no one expected such great outcomes. The net result – staggering, stunning, stupendous – take your pick of the word to describe it.

In our news article last month we had given details of the paintings being offered and some of the expected prices. Now lets give you a little view of the final outcomes.

Mystic Repast – A 1953 Souza took the cake with an astounding $153,600 (About Rupees 70 Lacs) – Perhaps one of the highest for Indian art ever far exceeding our prediction of $100,000.

Some of the other highlights – Husain’s Mother Teresa for almost $80,000, A Ram Kumar Abstract $30,000, Bendre’s Gossip for more than $35,000, Husain’s Maya & Hanuman for $24,000, Ganesh Pyne’s White Hand for $20,400, a Paniker went for $20,000, a Padamsee also for about the same amount.

At the end of the day about a total of more than 35 paintings went under the hammer and fetched a total of $700,000 (About Rupees 3 crores and 15 lacs)

India Shining in New York!!!

Ahmedabad - The 44th Annual state level art exhibition organised by the Lalit Kala Akademi is on here. An annual feature this sort of exhibition goes a long way in not only promoting emerging artists but also creating public interest and appreciation in art.

Artist Rafik Sindi of Vadodara won the award for “Painting of the Year” for his Still Line collage which combines three forms of art – painting, collage and still lines. He had earlier bagged UNESCO’s Asian Cultural Award in Japan for his photograph, on the theme “Water and Life”

New Delhi – Lalit Kala hosted a group show of works by renowned photographers, especially works of photojournalists. The photographs encompassed a wide variety of subjects from Politics to Life to Nature. An absolute joy to watch such work in high quality images – photos usually seen only in murky newsprint. Notable participants were photojournalist Avinash Pasricha and Nature photographer Thakur Dalip Singh.
