Cultures

The desire to understand cultures has always been a compelling factor for me to travel. To experience other ways of life gives me a clearer understanding of how I treat my fellow human-beings and the environment in which we live. Some live life like a one night stand, narrow sighted, not looking further than immediate gratification. Others prefer to look at the broader picture, the often more difficult, yet meaningful, lasting happiness.

Cultures are a combination of ancient traditions, religious influence, government law, social expectations and family customs. They intertwine and mingle creating a never ending variety of lifestyles. I find them intriguing in their diversity and never fail to be surprised.

Throughout the trip I encountered people who taught me their customs. In Iran I was lucky to be invited to attend the celebration of Haft Seen on the morning of No Ruz (Iranian New Year). I had very little knowledge of this feast but will never forget the morning spent with my most gracious host family. They knew nothing of prejudice due to one’s faith and proved that even the most religious of Islamic scholars can have understanding and compassion towards the supposedly sacrilegious West. I was taught their understanding of life and even though I was still considered an infidel I received their heartfelt blessings.

To me, cultures give a rare glimpse into a world of diversity which is slowly diminishing. To embrace cultures makes me feel more complete in a world that is all too often defined by its divisions.
