Emerging Artist Shireen Advani

Born in 1939, As a child, Shireen Advani would sketch natural scenes as well as human figures and faces instead of scribbling on notepads. The art teacher at school in India encouraged her to paint. Her family did not encourage or recognize her artistic talent.

After graduating in B.Com, Shireen got married in 1965 and moved to London. During her stay abroad for 45 years, she had the opportunity to travel and live in Europe, Caribbean, US, Asia and Africa. Travel to various countries opened her eyes and understanding of uniqueness in diversity and appreciation of a variety of cultures. Visiting art galleries, beaches and scenic places and work of old masters such as Vincent Van Gogh, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Leonard Da Vinci, Jean Francois Millet, Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, Pablo Picasso, and other artists inspired and influenced her paintings.

In 1970 when living in Barbados, Shireen started off by painting empty glass jars and bottles followed by painting Caribbean scenes. Her beautiful paintings of Caribbean scenes showed expression of strong emotion and love for nature. She spent considerable time sitting on the beach studying passing of the waves, ripples, undercurrents and moving of water at high and low tide. Painting soon became her passion.

In 1973, she along with her husband moved to Lagos, Nigeria where she continued painting. She expressed herself through paintings by using vibrant colors and texture to capture glimpses of life when painting nature and village scenes in Africa.

In 1983, Shireen Advani joined college for instructions in painting in the United States under the guidance of a well-known painter, Eakin, and college professor McLaughlin. Her paintings were continuously and consistently displayed in the college art gallery. Although she is a versatile painter, what she enjoys most is painting seascapes and landscapes and her favorite media is oil. She expresses her artistic talent with use of unique colors and imagination.

She graduated in Interior Design in 1987 and from then on until 1997 worked full time as an Interior Design Consultant. In this role, she was able to help thousands of families to decorate their homes. She has, from time to time, participated in various local art exhibitions in USA, Barbados & Nigeria and has sold many of her paintings.
