Report of World Wetlands Day Poster Competition on 2nd February 2013
Every year 2 February is celebrated as the World Wetlands Day. It marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea. Each year since 1997, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and groups of citizens at all levels of the community have taken advantage of the opportunity to undertake actions aimed at raising public awareness of wetland values and benefits in general, and the Ramsar Convention in particular. 2013 is the UN International Year for Water Cooperation and an ideal opportunity for Ramsar to look at the connection between water and wetlands.
To celebrate this day BNHS - CEC in collaboration with Environment Committee, Rotary Club of Bombay had organized a poster competition at BNHS Conservation Education Centre. 60 Students from 15 Schools of Mumbai & surrounding areas participated in the competition. The competition was open to students of grade 5th to 9th.
Registration for the programme begin at 9.00 a.m. after which all the students assembled themselves in the auditorium which was followed by a small introduction about the organization by Ms. Priti Choghale, Senior Education Officer and presentation on Wetlands and why they are important was conducted by Ms Amandeep Kaur, Education Officer for the students so they can have a clear Idea about the wetlands. After the presentation Tips on Poster making was given to the students by Ms. Chitra Vaidya, Judge of the Competition, and then the students were divided into two groups for the purpose of judging them, Greater Flamingo - students of 8th and 9th, Lesser Flamingo - 5th to 7th, the criteria of Judging was Concept, Presentation, Innovation, & Theme Appropriateness. Before the Competition commenced the breakfast was served. On completion of the competition of poster making at 1.00 p.m. the students were given the lunch break which was then followed by a Nature Trail in the BNHS Nature Reserve, The trail was conducted by Ms. Amandeep Kaur, Mr. Kaustubh Bhagat and Ms. Isha Sawant. After which the snacks were served and then followed the most awaited session of day Result Announcement.
Judging of the Posters was done by Dr. V. Shubhalaxmi, Ms. Jyotsana Pathare & Ms. Chitra Vaidya. Dr. V. Shubhalaxmi addressed the students and their parents which followed the prize distribution session. The winning entries received attractive prizes like Twitter Clock, Book of Indian Birds and The Bird Nest. Participation certificate was awarded to all the students along with the merit certificate which was awarded to the winners. The Certificates and Prizes were awarded by Mr. Jagdish Malkani, Chairman Environment Committee, Rotary Club, Ms. Chitra Vaidya Artist & Judge for the Competition, Ms. Jyotsana Pathare Artist & Judge for the Competition, and Dr. V. Shubhalaxmi, Dy. Director BNHS.
Ganesh Badgeri, Sharvari Kemkar, Shruti Deshpande from Greater Flamingos and Jeel Parekh, Tanvi Naram, Nikita Tompe from Lesser Flamingos won 1st, 2nd & 3rd prize respectively. The programme was concluded by 5.00 p.m. with a Thank you speech by Dr. V. Shubhalaxmi and a group photo of all the participants with the Judges, Mr. Jagdish Malkani and BNHS Team.
