K. G. Subramanyan (1924 - 2016)

Eminent artist and scholar K. G. Subramanyan was born in 1924. Painter, sculptor, muralist and print maker Subramanyan was imprisoned by the British for taking part in the Quit India movement. On his release, he came to study at Kala Bhavana, Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan (1944-48) and little later he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London (1955-56). He was a professor of two outstanding art institutions such as Faculty of Fine Arts, M. S. University, Vadodara and Kala Bhavan. Nearly for five decades Subramanyan has been as a teacher sensitizing his students to the interface between art language and experience the common ground for creativity and communication. He had authored many books such as Moving focus, The Living Tradition, The Creative Circuit etc.

  • 2004 : Lalit Kala Ratna awarded by the Lalit Kala Akademi on the occasion of its golden jubilee. (on 9 August 2004)
